Beyond Rum & Saltfish is a coffee table book published in 2016 to commemorate Barbados’ 50th Anniversary as an independent nation. Conceptualized to celebrate and inform its reader on the longstanding ties between Canada and Barbados, the first part of the publication presents a historical and cultural overview of the island. The second half is dedicated to recognizing past, present and future significant contributors of Barbadian heritage, to Canadian society.

We captured the patriotism of migrating Barbadians through the inclusion of their national pledge on the front and back covers, featuring respectively, Barbados and Canada beachscapes. The colours of the Barbados flag (blue and yellow), a scheme of four hues, and strategically placed poems are among several elements incorporated to create synthesis between the book’s two distinct parts.
